CORE Education was established in 2003 as a charitable, not-for-profit company that believes in providing public good services for the education sector in New Zealand.
Initially CORE was under the trusteeship of the Canterbury Development Corporation. As part of the continuing development of the company, a new trust has been established in June 2012 to act as shareholders of the organisation. The Trust's role is to be the Kaitiaki for CORE, ensuring the company remains true to its charitable purpose.
The CORE Education Charitable Trust is made up of the following trustees:
Martin is a Chartered Accountant, having graduated from the University of Canterbury in 1971 with a B.Com.
His accountancy career commenced with Burtt McGillivray and Mann in 1965, and then through a series of mergers, he held positions of Partner in Charge of Business Advisory Services and Taxation with Morris Pattrick and Co (subsequently KPMG) and Hadlee Kippenberger and Partners.
His involvement in public life has included community social services organisations, the arts, education and heritage sectors, sports administration, medical services, tourism and Canterbury development.
He is a member of the Institute of Directors and has held a number of director and trustee positions for a range of clients and organisations including those on the Not for Profit sector.
Gillian has held many leadership roles in education, including principal of Rangi Ruru Girls' School, co-director of Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti, and a mentor for First Time Principals in a range of schools. She is recognised internationally for her role as Guardian of the Secondary Futures project, which looked at the future possibilities for secondary education in New Zealand, and was part of the OECD Schooling for Tomorrow project.
Gillian is now an education specialist working in governance and advisory roles. She has extensive governance experience and is currently chair of the NZ Olympic Education Commission, deputy chair of Te Aho o te Kura Pounamu and serves on the Partnership Schools Kura Hourua Authorisation board.
Gillian was awarded the MNZM for Services to Education (2010).
Frank has held a number of global leadership and governance roles in high technology product and service businesses. He is passionate about linking the business and academic worlds and the way in which creativity, knowledge, and collaboration, are driving today’s new business models. His latest company is Terminus Intermediaire, a New Zealand and European-based company delivering innovative approaches to design and education for both business and academia. He is also an adjunct senior fellow at the University of Canterbury, Colleges of Business & Law, and Engineering.
Frank has a BSc (Hons) in Electronic Engineering from University of London, and an MBA from IMD International in Switzerland. He is a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, an amateur radio licence holder, and a former director of the Canterbury Development Corporation.
Ronnie has been happily immersed in education for over 30 years, as a secondary teacher, curriculum leader, teacher educator, in-service facilitator, academic researcher, and administrator. Currently at the University of Canterbury, she teaches English and literacy education courses at graduate and post-graduate levels. She also has a leadership role in the School of Teacher Education in the College of Education at the University of Canterbury.
Ronnie brings to the role an extensive national profile in English education, is on several international academic editorial and review boards, and, until recently, served on project advisory, curriculum and assessment development writing groups for most Ministry of Education and New Zealand Qualifications Authority initiatives involving Subject English over the last two decades. Her other main educational passions lie in the areas of teacher education and professional learning and mentoring of teachers and teacher educators — a key research area as well.
Ronnie’s connections with CORE Education go back to its founding days. With a national profile in Teacher Education, Ronnie was seconded from her university position to take on a role as National Facilitator on the Ministry of Education INSTEP (In-service Teacher Education Project) for CORE Education, 2006-9. Ronnie is the recipient of both teaching and research awards, but the thing she is proudest of is her marriage to Dr Vince Ham, one of the original CORE founding members, and she is probably best known for her muffin making skills and her earrings!
The CORE Education Board provide the governance and strategic leadership for the company. Its role is to ensure CORE operates as a successful business, is a good employer, and has social responsibility and the interest of the community as part of its role.

Chris is a community and stakeholder engagement specialist and passionate about personal and community development. He is a professional director, facilitator, and adviser who has taken on a diverse number of roles in sectors including education, health, justice, local government, police, recreation, Pacific peoples, social services, and sport. Chris works as a General Manager with Regenerate Christchurch. He is also an elected director on the Canterbury District Health Board and Trustee of the Wayne Francis Charitable Trust. He is a member of and trainer for the International Association of Public Participation as well as a member of the NZ Institute of Directors.
Kaila is the New Zealand Ambassador for Singularity University. She is also a co-founder and Chair of the non-profit Ministry of Awesome, Curator of TEDxChristchurch, Chair of the New York-based Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts, a board member of Canterbury Development Corporation Holdings Ltd and a Certified ExO Consultant with ExO Works. A native New Yorker, Kaila speaks English, Spanish, French and Italian, holds a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration from Cornell University and has been a serial entrepreneur since the age of 22. Her purpose in life is to be an uplifting presence.
Bruce has a career in chartered accounting and in that capacity was heavily involved in the development and governance of a major Māori tertiary educational initiative. He is a trustee of several not-for-profit trusts, and written and delivered academic papers on governance. He is a Senior Lecturer at Manukau Institute of Technology, specialising in accounting, auditing and assurance, governance, ethics and management. His business experiences relate primarily to advising small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
Hannah descends from Taranaki iwi and Te Atiawa and is Taranaki Whanui ki te Upoko o te Ika. She has a background in education and runs her own management consultancy specialising in strategic advice, organisation development, and change management. Hannah is also a company director and trustee working mainly in iwi development, land, property, conservation and environment contexts. Hannah’s personal interests include health and wellbeing, whakapapa, languages, art, and travel.
Deb is Director of the Global Enterprise Experience, an action learning education programme developing global leadership skills in 103 countries. She has been a judge for the Prime Minister’s Awards for Public Sector Excellence for 13 years and served on several boards including the commercial arm of Victoria University. Her consultancy company, Te Kaihau Ltd, raises innovation performance in organisations and individuals. She is a teaching fellow at Victoria University in innovation, management, and marketing. Deb’s work on ADHD has led to research programmes around the world.
Sheelagh is the Executive Director of the Academic Quality Agency for New Zealand Universities. She has over 25 years of experience in universities in New Zealand, the USA and the UK, including over 10 years of governance roles in tertiary education. Sheelagh has led a series of change and re-positioning projects, including mergers. She is passionate about the contribution of education for individual and community development and growth.
