Introduction

Keeping Safe Online

NetSafe

As the people of the world are becoming increasingly connected, the nature, use, ownership, and purpose of knowledge are changing in profound ways. Our goal as educators is to leverage these connections and changes as powerful means to improve teaching and learning in our schools. (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach, Keynote address)
Keeping ourselves and our students safe online is a growing issue with the increasing use of Web 2.0 technologies, communities, and environments. As educators, we should not stop using these tools, but:
  • be alert, vigilant, and aware of the issues
  • disseminate cybersafety education to our students and parents
  • implement strategies to lower the risks.
We are fortunate in New Zealand to have NetSafe, the Internet Safety Group, which actively supports schools, students, and educators in their role to keep our students safe online. The workshop presentation from NetSafe includes six videos, supported by links to the variety of services and resources that NetSafe provides.

We invite and encourage you to ask questions or share experience in the keeping safe online workshop forum.

  • Hector’s World TM introduces children to the concept of cybersafety using engaging animations and other resources. Free lesson plans are available for teachers to use alongside the animated episodes.
  • The Hector Safety Button TM can be downloaded and installed on Windows based computers (and Apple from June 2007). The animated button covers the screen with a friendly picture and message when clicked. This both hides upsetting content, and encourages children to be responsible and seek help from an adult if something distressing occurs while they are online. The button can be downloaded by searching for ‘Hector Protector’ at www.microsoft.com/downloads.
