Introduction

Keynote: Student Voice

hui1hui2
Today's kids have immediate access to information everywhere they turn. They are truly mobile with their technology. (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach, Keynote address)
Mark Prensky in his writing and in conference appearances, has regaled us to ‘listen to the digital natives’. We may well decide the notion of 'digital natives’ and ‘digital immigrants’ has outlived a useby date. But as educators, many of us are very aware of the power and importance of student voice. If teachers are to engage and motivate young people, if teachers believe that this generation of young people has the talent and creativity to solve complex world issues, then we need also to understand the world that they inhabit.

In fact we need to actively engage with them in that world in a way that we are learners too. We have much to learn from the young people in our classrooms. This section of our online conference is to allow you to hear and see some of the amazing things our students are doing. Engage, listen, be amazed, learn. In eliciting powerful student voice, we have the potential to build real learning communities in our schools.

This workshop includes a number of student voices of all ages. In some presentations, students share how they use technologies and in others they share presentations given at a regional Tech Hui in Wellington for secondary students and their teachers. We welcome and feature:
  1. Carey and Aonghas - Rutherford College
  2. Daniel - Wellington High School
  3. Room 9 (6-7 year olds and teacher Rachel Boyd) - Nelson Central School
  4. Phillip, Chris, and Alex with Greg Carroll
  5. Tech Angels - Wellington Girls' College
  6. Rachel and Kelly - university students, former Tech Angels
  7. Palmerston North (PNth): Awatapu College and Freyberg High School
We invite and encourage you and your students to ask questions or share experiences in the workshop participation area.

  • mentoring staff (teaching a teacher!)
  • mentoring junior Tech Angel’s (teaching younger WGC students)
  • working at Te Kete Ipurangi (TKI) as virtual communicators
  • developing and running the Tech Angels website
  • videoing and photographing school events for the website and other presentations
  • entering competitions and digital challenges that extend and support their curriculum studies
  • liaising online with other young people around the country.
