Online Publishing 2

Welcome to the Online Publishing with Audio and Visual Tools Workshop.

Web 2.0 is not a newer or updated version of the web, but a description of the changing way we now use this environment. Traditionally the web has consisted of isolated links designed to send information. Web 2.0 is more about open connectivity, communication and the freedom to create, share, edit and re-use content. Carolyn Stuart writes, “Web 2.0 gives people the ability to collaborate and form self-organising communities (Leading the Future 2007, adapted from the article The Third Wave, published: NZ Principal, November 2006).

We now have access to a facility which enables anyone to publish globally using a range of audio and visual tools online. Modes of communication include text, blogs, wikis, instant messaging, chat forums, podcasting, enhanced podcasting, video sharing, image sharing and slidesharing. Some websites such as www.zoho.com provide a suite of tools for open source publishing. Our students are now able to connect to each other and to other experts through a variety of multimedia methods.

We are lucky to have Jane Nicholls and Suzie Vesper take us through the possibilities that Web 2.0 publishing tools bring to the classroom. As Suzie says, "this breaks down the traditional four walls and allows our learners to publish in a wider global context".
  • What then, are the implications for us as teachers?
  • What are some of these tools?
  • How do they work?
  • What are the benefits?
  • And what does effective practice look like?
We also invite you to get involved as an active participant. Click and view the presentations, ask questions frequently, complete tasks online, and share ideas to synthesise these activities.

Presentation one - Jane Nicholls

Adventures in Podcasting

Bio
Jane NichollsJane Nicholls is a primary trained teacher who has taught in Western Australia and New Zealand. Jane teaches at Pine Hill School in Dunedin and spent a year as the deputy principal of this school. She is also the part-time ICT facilitator for the Tai o Rapuwai cluster of schools in Dunedin.

In 2007, Jane is on a year's release from her classroom teaching as a recipient of an e-Learning Fellowship through the NZ Ministry of Education. She is studying the effects of podcasting on students' oral literacies.
Description
Oral Language is the basis for all learning and is a powerful tool in itself. Podcasting is a way to harness the power of audio for authenticity - of purpose, audience, and context. What is this thing called podcasting and why should I care?

This presentation is for those people who have heard the word podcasting and would like to know what it means. I will showcase podcasts for fun, professional development, and for student learning, and give you directions for putting your toe in the water and having a go yourself.

Presentation

Part 1 - outlines the importance of oral language and an overview of podcasting. Related links are on Jane's blog.

Part 2 - Jane showcases podcasts for fun, learning, instruction, and student learning. Related links are on Jane's blog.

Presentation two - Suzie Vesper

Involved Community and Motivated Children - Publishing Presentations Online

Bio
Suzie VesperSuzie Vesper is an ICT facilitator for nine primary schools in Lower Hutt and is very interested in the possibilities of Web 2.0 and open source software. She maintains a wiki looking at these tools and programs, as well as a website with useful curriculum links for teachers.

She is in her 12th year of teaching, four and a half of which were spent working in London. Suzie has taught Year 3 to Year 6 over this time, as well as spending two years as an English Second Language (ESL) specialist teacher across all age groups.
Description
Traditionally, in our classrooms, the audience for children's work has been the teacher and the classmates with only some of the work finding a wider audience through means such as portfolios. Some children struggle to demonstrate their learning effectively using 'pen and paper' methods and this may be the only lens through which the parents see the progress of their child. With the advent of an exciting range of new Web 2.0 tools, the opportunity now exists to take the learning past the four walls of the classroom and engage with the parents and the wider community about children's learning in 'real time' rather than at set reporting times.

As children become aware of the wider audience, they become more motivated and the tasks become more meaningful to them - their work will end up on the world stage with the ability to interact with that audience. With the ability to use multimedia tools such as video and podcasts (audio), there can be a better fit between the learning styles of every child and the tools they use to present their learning. This session is focusing on a couple of key Web 2.0 tools which can be used for this purpose.

Presentation

This presentation was made with a Web 2.0 tool called Zentation which combines Google Video content with uploaded PowerPoints hosted at SlideShare. Go to the Publishing Video Online page on the Time4 Online wiki to get information on how you can do this and to learn about and use other online tools.

Session outcomes
By the end of this session, you will have learned about how to upload and embed videos and slideshows to your wiki or blog. If you don't have a wiki or blog, you still have the opportunity to add your work to the conference wiki. To get the most out of this session, you will need to have some video footage, photos, or a PowerPoint to upload (or all three!).

After uploading your content to the web using the Web 2.0 tools in this workshop, please embed the results into the Your Space 2 Try page of the conference wiki. 'Doing' rather than 'viewing' is the best way to really get to grips with these tools so please take up this opportunity to give it a go. Not sure how to add to the wiki? Don't worry - there are detailed instructions on the How 2 Edit This Wiki page.

Video
To find out all about uploading video to the web and then embedding it into your wikis and blogs, please visit the How 2 Publish Video page of the conference wiki.

Slideshows
To find out about publishing photo slideshows and PowerPoint slideshows to the Internet and then embedding these into your wiki or blogs, visit the How 2 Publish Slideshows page of the conference wiki.

Live chat
I would love to meet with you, hear your comments, and answer any questions you have. There is a live chat Web 2.0 tool called Gabbly that I plan to use as part of the conference. It allows you to chat to other people who are currently on the same webpage as you.

To use it, all you need to do is add http://gabbly.com/ to the front of any web address and other people who have done the same will be available for chat. The website where I propose we meet is the 'How to Publish Video' page of the conference wiki. Follow this link to go directly to the page with the chat box open:

Chat dates and times
  • Tuesday, 5 June, anytime between 3:30pm to 5:00pm (NZ time) The World Clock - Time Zone Converter
  • Wednesday, 6 June, anytime between 1:30pm to 4:00pm (I may also be online at other times)
