Educators as Professional Learners

Welcome to the third keynote for our Time4 Online Conference.

It is my very real pleasure to introduce Derek Wenmoth as the final keynote for this our first ICT PD Online Conference with a focus on Educators as Professional Learners. The webs and nets of communication of Web 2.0 (which Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach introduced us to so eloquently), offer a means of ongoing learning for all of us. Our students are already there, communicating, learning, and growing. Some students, such as Carey and Daniel, are engaged in web enterprise, already earning money from their knowledge, abilities and activities.

In educational terms, Derek Wenmoth is a highly respected practitioner from whom we can learn enormously. His blog offers knowledge and insight which emanate from truly reflective practice. His willingness to share and his desire to continue to learn from others are trademarks of the networks of people he grows. His challenge to us, is in what actions we take from this point, to continue to build real communities of practice and improve the learning outcomes for our students. Enjoy your interaction with a leading NZ Educator. Derek
has compiled his keynote address in two parts:
  1. slide presentation
  2. video
Please contribute your thoughts to the Time4 Online Keynote Forum to extend the conversation. Welcome Derek.

Keynote Address: Part one

Introductory Slide Presentation

Description
In this key address, Derek hopes to engage with educators about their experiences as reflective and life-long learners, and how they have managed to engage in various forms of professional discourse. In this introductory slide presentation, Derek sets the scene for what will be covered in the video and the forum - from establishing the context for professional learning, to thinking about how technology, in particular, Web 2.0 technologies, can create opportunities for meaningful professional learning to occur.

Derek will share and explain his personal use of many of the available Web 2.0 technologies as a way of illustrating the things he will be discussing, and invites others to share their experiences also. The desired outcome of this forum will be a greater awareness among participants of:
  • the need for educators to engage in professional learning activities
  • some practical ways in which Web 2.0 technologies can assist.
