Tech Angels - Wellington Girls' College

tech_angelsBios
Sophie and Amanda are year 12 students at Wellington Girls College. They are both involved in organising the TKI group at Wellington Girls’ College. The Tech Angels involved with TKI help run the WickED site. This site is an educational site for New Zealand primary school students. The Tech Angels reply to email and questions from students who use the site, organise crosswords and quizzes, and interview prominent New Zealanders for the site.

Description
This presentation was a keynote address at the regional Tech Hui at Wellington College, 23 May 2007 for secondary students. WGC Tech Angels are students who have an interest in ICT and who want to further develop their skills. They come from all year levels in the school and the year 13 students are responsible for running the programme and mentoring staff and younger Tech Angels.

Most Tech Angels are involved in mentoring or their own project to work in a collaborative way with members of staff or their peers, for example:
  • mentoring staff (teaching a teacher!)
  • mentoring junior Tech Angel’s (teaching younger WGC students)
  • working at Te Kete Ipurangi (TKI) as virtual communicators
  • developing and running the Tech Angels website
  • videoing and photographing school events for the website and other presentations
  • entering competitions and digital challenges that extend and support their curriculum studies
  • liaising online with other young people around the country.
The girls are computer literate and enjoy the problem-solving and creative environment of ICT.
